History of UXU Ranch
The Legacy of The Historical UXU Ranch
Located at the confluence of June Creek and the North Fork of the Shoshone River, the UXU Ranch sits in its original historic location, nestled in a heavily forested and mountainous setting. Just 17 miles east of the east entrance into Yellowstone National Park, UXU offers a glimpse into the past with its pristine surroundings.
The ranch retains much of its original charm and appearance, closely resembling its layout from 1929 to 1950. During this period, the ranch underwent a transformation from its early sawmill-tent cabin phase. Many of the contributing buildings were constructed using lumber processed at the on-site sawmill, which operated until the early decades of the 1900s.
Founded by Bob Rumsey, a Yale graduate with a diverse background in education, cattle ranching, dairy farming, politics, and dude ranching, UXU Ranch has a storied past that reflects the pioneering spirit of the American West.
Bob Rumsey’s father, Bronson Rumsey II, was a founding father of Cody, Wyoming, adding to the ranch’s legacy. Immerse yourself in the history and heritage of UXU Ranch by engaging with our team, who are eager to share the fascinating stories that have shaped this iconic destination.
The Hand Drawn Map
of the Historic UXU
The UXU Ranch is a living piece of Western history, showcasing 18 original buildings and structures arranged in the classic rustic style of a traditional guest ranch. At the heart of the property sits the grand Main Lodge, a welcoming gathering spot surrounded by cozy guest cabins, outbuildings, and support facilities that make up the ranch. These structures have been thoughtfully preserved and date back to the late 1800s through the 1930s, maintaining their authentic charm and historical integrity even with essential updates like modern plumbing and mechanical systems. The architecture and materials reflect the craftsmanship of the time, allowing guests to step back into the early Western guest ranch experience. Our hand-drawn map captures this unique layout and historic charm, guiding visitors through an authentic Wyoming landscape shaped by history and preserved for generations to enjoy.
The Swinging Bridge
When Bob Rumsey founded the UXU Ranch, he built a unique four-foot-wide swinging bridge that spanned the North Fork River, serving as the sole access point to the ranch. This rustic bridge, swaying slightly above the river’s current, created an adventurous first impression for arriving guests. To cross, guests would ring the front desk, signaling a ranch hand to help them with their luggage over the precarious path. For decades—until well into the 1960s—Rumsey and subsequent owners maintained this bridge, believing that its thrilling, slightly nerve-wracking nature might encourage guests to stay longer, rather than cross back over too soon. The swinging bridge became a hallmark of the UXU experience, a memorable initiation to the charm, ruggedness, and character of the ranch that left a lasting impression on all who visited.
